Republic Wireless Review: Get Cell Service for $20 Per Month!
Some of the links in this post are from our sponsors. Read our disclosure to see how we make money.
How much do you spend monthly on cell phone service? Prepaid phone services have been my go-to method for years to get a cheaper phone bill. If you want to save money on your cell phone bill, Republic Wireless is my favorite provider as they offer plans as low as $20 per month.
No-contract phone plans let you save money by paying for exactly what you need. Traditional carriers charge you at the end of the month, regardless of whether you use all their features.
A terrific feature of prepaid phone plans is they’re predictable. You know what you’re receiving, how much you’ll spend, and you can cancel at any time.
If you want a cheap phone plan, our Republic Wireless review shares why they may be a provider worth considering for your needs.
What is Republic Wireless?
Paying $20 per month for cell phone service seems too good to be true. Republic Wireless plans, like other no-contract providers, come from a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) that operates on the network of a legacy carrier.
For instance, Republic operates on the Sprint and T-Mobile networks. As a result, Republic Wireless coverage is available in 99 percent of the country.
Since being introduced in 2011 Republic Wireless has become a well-known name in the no-contract space. Collectively, Republic Wireless members have saved over $500 million for making the switch to the service.
Republic Wireless Review
Do you want an affordable phone plan that provides reliable service without sacrificing quality? Read on to see why the Republic Wireless phone plans can meet those needs.
You can make the switch to Republic Wireless in three simple steps. The first thing you should do is be sure that you will have coverage. You can check the service area right through the Republic website.
Be sure that your home, work, and frequent travel destinations are all within the coverage area. You can then decide if you want to bring your own device while buying a new SIM card.
The other option is just buying one of the Republic Wireless phones on their website. I love that the carrier has some of the latest smartphones, so you can still enjoy all your apps and data while saving money.
From there, you create your account and choose your plan.
Republic Wireless Plans
Plans cost so little with Republic Wireless that you may think there’s something wrong with the service. Trust me, that’s not the case. Their service works just as well as any other company I’ve tried.
The key to them keeping the price low is that their phones connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible so you can make calls, send texts, and use your apps.
When you’re not near a secure Wi-Fi connection, your phone will simply switch to the cell network instantly.
The plans start at just $15 per month, and this includes talk and text, but no data. Here are the basic plans:
- Unlimited talk and text = $15 per month
- Data = $5 per GB
It’s that simple, and you customize it to your needs.
If you are still going over your high-speed data limit, you can buy additional gigs by paying only $5 per GB, up to 15 GB extra per month.
You can keep track of where you are with your data by logging into your account. Then, just add 1 GB of data at a time with one click.
When you run out of data, unless you are on Wi-Fi, your device will stop working. This way you won’t incur any overage fees or any surprises like that.
If you would rather just have one yearly payment to budget for, Republic Wireless offers an annual payment option. Choosing this route can get you 12 months of service for the price of ten months.
If you don’t want this right away, no problem. You can simply change it using the manage my data feature through the app or website. It’s also possible to view a breakdown of all the annual plans there.
You may feel hesitant to sign an annual plan. Republic Wireless offers a 14-day money-back guarantee for instances like this.
If you sign up for service and find they don’t work for you, it’s easy to get your money back.
If you are hoping to have a cell phone to call internationally, unfortunately, Republic Wireless might not be the best choice.
The carrier does not allow you to make international calls or texts. However, you can receive international communications, whether you’re here in the States or traveling internationally.
The only requirement is a Wi-Fi connection is necessary to receive those calls and texts.
While international calling is quite limited, you can make calls or send texts to the following countries or territories:
- American Samoa
- Puerto Rico
- US Virgin Islands
- Northern Mariana Islands
- Johnston Atoll
- Midway Atoll
- Wake Island
These calls are allowed but can cost up to $0.50 per minute. If you need international service, Tello Mobile is a suitable alternative to Republic and offers similar savings on cell service.
Bring Your Own Phone
If you want to make the switch to start saving, but you don’t want to buy a Republic Wireless phone, your current device might work with their service.
Most brands are eligible for transfer including these:
After selecting your brand, the site allows you to check to see if the hundreds of phone compatible models are transferable. Once you know you have a device that will work with Republic Wireless, then it’s time to buy a SIM card.
Their SIM card is just $5 and fits all compatible devices no matter the shape or size of the phone.
You will notice one glaring brand missing from the list of devices that will work on the network – Apple. If you love your iPhone, Republic is not currently an option.
Here is a list of MVNO carriers that are iPhone compatible:
- Mint Mobile (read our Mint Mobile review here)
- Straight Talk
- Tello (read our Tello review here)
- Ting (read our Ting review here)
Any of the above are terrific options to save money on cell service and operate much like Republic Wireless.
Republic loves to pass savings onto customers. They often have promotions on new phones as well as various plan discounts.
The MVNO runs other, short-term promotions, such as free service for 30 days, but it varies each month. If all else fails, you can always ask what promotions they’re currently offering when you sign up for service.
It’s also worth mentioning the customer support process that Republic Wireless follows. Expert members answer most customer questions through email.
Expert members are customers that know about Republic Wireless products and services. You just submit a help ticket through the website and sometimes get answers within minutes.
The help isn’t from staff but should be able to handle most questions. The member community is another place to go for answers.
The questions are organized by category to help you find the info you need more quickly.
The carrier also offers chat support with representatives for more advanced needs.
Pros and Cons
Every phone company has their flaws, but they all strive to minimize them. Below are some of the pros and cons of using Republic Wireless.
- Affordable plans
- Even without a contract, 98 percent of Republic Wireless members stay each month according to the company
- 24/7 US-based technical support
- Add data right from your phone
- Just $5 per GB you add on per month
- No overage fee
- Check bring-your-own-phone compatibility right from the website
- No phone technical support
- Limited international calling
- No retail locations-but that is usually the case with MVNO’s
If you need a carrier that offers reliable coverage, without a lot of bells and whistles, Republic Wireless is an excellent option to consider.
Republic Wireless is an excellent option for people looking for new ways to save on their monthly cell phone bill. Their prices are some of the best out there.
It’s also helpful that you can simply tack on more GB for your data so quickly and easily. Once you have a better idea of how much you’ll use, you can customize your plan to fit your needs and budget the best.
You are limited in what you can do internationally, but some features are available when connected to Wi-Fi.
If you like the ability to manage your plan as you wish and want to pay $20 per month for service, Republic Wireless is an excellent choice for phone service.
