Random Facts

I was inspired by Catherine over at Plunged in Debt who shared a few random facts about herself to help fellow bloggers get to know each other a little better. In the same spirit of transparency, and not without a little levity, I’ve decided to share a little bit about myself. The above picture, by the way, is of our renowned zoo. Here it goes in no particular order:

1. My family and I live in good ole Omaha, Nebraska. Home to the most restaurants, golf courses, and millionaires per capita. (Not to mention the home of the Oracle of Omaha…Warren Buffett.)

2. I absolutely LOVE to travel. I have been to Europe three times (with Ireland and Germany duking it out for my favorite destination), South America as well as various spots in the Caribbean. My personal goal is to make it to all seven continents with the highlight being Antarctica.

3. I have lived in seven states: Tennessee, Virginia, Illinois, Kansas, Nebraska, California, and Alaska. I have visited 42 of the 50 States.

4. My wife, Nicole, and I met in Florida, dated long distance for four months, and married soon after. I popped the question on Christmas Eve night. Call me a softy…I am a romantic at heart.

5. If there was one food that I could get rid of for all of time it would be the Lima Bean. I absolutely abhor them and would never consume or serve them.

6. My wife and I have four beautiful children. We lost our first son, Isaac, shortly after he was born and it was the toughest thing (putting it VERY lightly) I’ve ever experienced in my life.

7. I love giving nicknames (always nice ones) to close friends and family. It’s even better when those nicknames take on a life of their own. Perfect example is my 24 year old brother who is now known to many, including quite a few that I’ve never met, as Buttercup. To know him, he’s all man but one day I pulled Buttercup out of thin air and it went viral. He even gets first class mail referring to him as Buttercup.

8. I can always tell what celebrity voice is being used in a commercial. I am not just talking about the easy ones like James Earl Jones or Alec Baldwin, but anyone.

9. I dress for 80 degree weather every day because I can’t stand to be hot. I am usually in shorts and sandals…even when I shovel snow. It drives my wife nuts and always embarrasses her.

10. My wife calls me the Human Calculator. I can do pretty much any math problem in my head without much effort. I know, I know…it makes me a bit of a nerd, but it can be quite helpful at times.

Ok, that’s enough about me. What’s one random fact about yourself that you’d like to share in the spirit of getting to know each other a little better?

  • Thanks for sharing about yourself John:) Here are a couple of my random facts: I’ve lived in 6 states. I went to school on a baseball scholarship and graduated with a theatre degree…how is that for random?

  • This is a great idea. I feel like I know you better already 🙂

About Me – Well this isn’t something I normally tell people but it’s fresh in my mind because I just finished watching it – I love watching Bargain Hunt! It’s possibly the most camp show on TV, but I just can’t get enough of it.
How embarrassing, I’m sure I’m going to wish I put something different in this little comment box later.

    • John says:

Yea, I know a few other bloggers have done something like this and I liked the idea.

Lol! I am sure there are far worse things one could share about themselves. 🙂

  • Shorts and sandals while you shovel snow? That’s incredible! I only know a couple people who stick it out and wear shorts in the winter. As you know, the winters in the Midwest can get pretty cold…

I might consider doing a post like this, I’ve seen a few others and have enjoyed reading little facts about various bloggers.

  • justin@thefrugalpath says:

You’ve got me beat with the shorts in winter thing. I thought I was nuts by dressing in short sleeved shirts all year round and never wearing gloves or a hat.
I’ve lived in one state, one county really my entire life. And met Erika in middle school, though we didn’t start dating until April of senior year. So i guess we’re high school sweethearts.

  • Catherine says:

I cannot even imagine the heartache your family went though, ever parents worst nightmare. SO sorry for your loss John.

My husband also hates being hot and wears shorts pretty much all year until there’s snow on the ground in which case he won’t for no reason other than to avoid comments from other people haha. We were in NYC a few years ago early Nov, we went to a football game (GB vs NYJ), he and my brother wore shorts and we got the whole ”Canadian tourist” thing all day haha…it didn’t happen we were there to watch the Jets and my brother is a die hard GB fan.

Other random fact about me: I sorta hate Halloween. It’s cute for kids but I’ve never been into dressing up or decorating for it…I’ll do it for my daughter and enjoy seeing young kids have fun but I don’t get the insanity around it.

  • Michelle says:

Love reading all of these facts about you! And haha I’m the same way with being a human calculator.

  • I’m very sorry to hear about your loss. I can’t imagine.

My husband wears shorts year round and would wear them always, but has to wear pants to work. He has had complete strangers come up to him in winter and tell him he’s crazy.

Random Fact: I have ridden a mechanical bull.

    • John says:

I can relate all to well Kim, I get the same thing when it’s cold too. I love it when some stranger will see me and ask if I know that it’s 20 degrees outside, I just usaully say “It is, I thought it was 80”. To which my wife usually is embarassed.

  • Edward Antrobus says:

Thanks for sharing. Just ship your lima beans to me, they are one of my 3 favorite vegetables! Since loosing weight, my cold tolerance has gone down, but I have a photo from college of me making a snow angel wearing only a pair of running shorts.

    • John says:

I’ll gladly do that Edward. I’ll eat pretty much any other vegetable, but I wouldn’t wish a lima bean on my worst enemy.

My Dad has said the same thing about his tolerance of cold. I’ve just always been this way and I guess that I come by it naturally.

  • Jason @ WSL says:

Hmmm…I’ll save my random factoids for a blog post! The #6 one is terrible…wow that must have been difficult. Glad you guys made it through!

  • Great to know you a bit better mate, it’s not something I often think about “knowing myself” but it’s important for many things. We should know more about what we like and don’t like not just when it happens. It’s hard for me to think of something that I haven’t said before.. but I would say I am a lover of taking things apart to see how they work then put them back together again. I love taking something broken and fixing it. . Happy Halloween mate. Mr.CBB

    • John says:

I would agree Mr. CBB. I love finding how things work as well. Unfortunately, my patience csan get the best of me and usually not get the thing back like it’s supposed to be. 😉

  • Veronica Hill says:

Nice getting to know you better. Interesting concept – the random facts posts, it is. – I like to talk like Yoda sometimes even though I’m really awful at it (as you can tell). I won 3rd place in kid marathon (in my age group, city with a population of 3 million). Apparently nobody told me I was racing against my own age, I just tried to keep up with all the adults. – it worked. I hate fast food and get very sick from eating a burger (unless it’s cooked by me, at home). How’s that for random?

  • Sorry to hear about you losing your son. I can’t imagine what that would be like. We don’t have any children yet but that is one of the things I fear when I think about trying.

Random fact about me: My feet are always cold. I don’t feel like they are cold but every night when I go to bed I put my foot against my wifes and she always yells at me ahah. She calls them corpse feet.

    • John says:

Yea, it was tough, to say the least, but we’re thankful that God brought us through it.

My wife is the same way! Her feet are always frigid and tries to put them on me in bed, it drives me nuts, so I can empathize with your wife. 🙂

  • I love these! I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your son. That must have been so hard! I always admired people who could do math in their head. I have to count on my fingers. I do not possess the math gene whatsoever. A random fact about me is that I love to travel, but I hate getting from point a to b, and I’m the least adventurous eater you will ever meet. I do, however, love lima beans. 🙂

  • John says:

Thanks, I agree they’re fun posts to read.

  • Savvy Scot says:

Hey! Great pick of different topics here.. I also can do sums very easily in my head and tend to get stroppy when people can’t keep up. Oops! Next time you are in Europe you HAVE to see Scotland – Ok?

    • John says:

Thanks. Ok, I admit…I admit that I had to Google stroppy, glad I did because it gace me a new word to use. 🙂

Scotland is at or near the top of my list of places to visit next. We were going to on our honeymoon, but we just ended up running out of time. I definitely plan on making a trip to there in the future.

  • So interesting . I love getting to know more about the person behind the blog. I can relate to your wife because I too am married to a human calculator. I wish I had that talent.

  • Pauline says:

Thank you for sharing more about yourself! You seem to have a very cute and strong marriage, that is priceless. I can imagine you mingling with penguins in Antarctica in your shorts now! I love giving nicknames too, even to people I don’t know personally.
I already gave my post’s worth of facts too, but here is one more: I was proposed to by a guy who already had a first wife, to be the second wife in a polygamous marriage.

    • John says:

Not a problem Pauline. I definitely want to go to Antarctica, but my wife says I am going on my own. 🙂 Yes, I am very blessed to have a loving wife to go through life with.
Wow, have you ever seen the show Big Love? Your fact is straight out of that.

  • Cat says:

Buttercup – that is completely awesome. Hmm..random facts, random facts..I’ve gone swimming with (nurse) sharks and stingrays.

  • Jennifer Lynn @ Broke-Ass Mommy says:

John, what a great post. Random fact: I swam in the Pacific with wild dolphins while four months pregnant. The dolphins’ echo location sensed two heartbeats in one body and therefore they hovered protectively around me. Absolutely surreal. I am so, so sorry about your sweet angel, Isaac.

  • John says:

    Thanks. Wow! That sounds awesome!

  • Interesting! I definitely feel like I know you better now. I’m the opposite of you when it comes to dressing. I always dress like it’s winter because I hate being cold (and I always am). I even have a small heater under my desk at work to keep me warm because I need more heat than the rest of the office.

  • Terry says:

I never liked Lima beans either when I was growing up. But, I’m a big fan of Soy beans.

Random fact: I like to do magic tricks in my spare time.

  • Mandy @MoneyMasterMom says:

Thanks for sharing a little about yourself!
I’ve lived on every continent with the exception of Antartica – the shortest stint being 1 month in Australia, the longest being 6 months in Ghana, West Africa. I don’t do well on boats since I was on a boat in Cambodia that nearly sank so I’m not sure I’ll be able to get to Antartica any time soon. Combine that with a preference for warmth rather then cold and I’m OK with that!.

    • John says:

No problem Mandy! That’s awesome you’ve been to all of those places. Which would you say is your favorite? I can understand not wanting to get on a boat after an experience like that. Thanks for stopping by.

    • Jackie says:

I’m so jealous! Traveling is one of my goals after paying off debt.

  • Jackie says:

Fact 9 is so funny and my complete opposite. My husband makes fun of me for being so cold natured. I stay wrapped in a cover or sweater. I loved this article and decided to copy both you and Catherine. This was a really cool read.

  • Jason Clayton | frugal habits says:

Cool Post John. I’ll have to do one very similar one day. We are very much alike in at least 2 of your items. I also love to Travel, if I were independently wealthy I would just travel nonstop. I also get hot all the time and tend to live in outfits made for the summer, even here in Wisconsin. (especially around my wife, who is the opposite 🙂

  • I am so sorry about Isaac. Losing a child is one of the worst things that can happen to us in this life.

We have a similar love for travel! Germany is a wonderful place to visit. Beautiful history, generally friendly people. I’ve visited a good part of the states, too, including moving around! Drove through Omaha once. Raced a tornado through the better part of the state.

Great to get to know you a bit better!

  • Wow, I didn’t know Nebraska had the most millionaires per capita. I would have thought it would be California or New York. Interesting! These types of posts are great because they allow us all to get to know the blogger better. I also hate to be hot but everyone else seems to hate to be cold. I’m glad I’m not the only one!

    • John says:

I know. I think it has to do with the fact that our population is not big like California or New York. Plus, we have quite a few Fortune 500 companies who are HQ here.

  • K.K. @ Living Debt Free Rocks! says:

I laughed out loud about you hating lima beans. I have the same hatred towards brussel sprouts…I gag just at the smell of them.
One random fact about me is that I am fierce fan of Winnie the Pooh. I have yet to meet an adult who appreciates Pooh and his friends the way I do! I also love to travel and both my DH and I have travelled extensively over the years.

    • John says:

I am glad I could give you a laugh. 🙂 I can stomach brussel sprouts. I don’t like them, but I’ll eat them. I would not wish a Lime Bean on the hungriest of people.

I think you’d like my Mom. She is the biggest Pooh fan I know. She got a Pooh tattoo a few years ago and for some reason is getting a honey pot tattoo for Christmas. Thanks for stopping by!

  • Liquid says:

Being good at mental math is a great skill to have. I’ve always wanted to have a superpower like rain man. Would come in handy when doing my finances :0) Fact about me: I love seafood!

  • John says:

It can be. Having that power would really be helpful with something like Blackjack. 😉

  • Boris says:

So having lived and seen so many states, which one was your favorite?
