You’ve probably noticed the astonishing amount of double standards out there as you go about your daily life. We all see them, and they point to life simply not always being fair.
Unfortunately, there’s often little that changes, though. In a recent discussion online, commenters shared double standards that really need to stop. Here are ten of their top choices.
Comparing Your Mother to Someone Else’s
It seems that mothers feel it’s perfectly acceptable to compare their children to someone else’s. However, if their children do the same, it’s a problem. One woman said, “My mom acted like I just stabbed her if I would say that someone else’s parents did something I wanted but how dare I feel upset as a child for her telling me that she wishes someone else was her kid and not me.”
Another person said, “Mothers are an abundant source of double standards.”
Being On Time For Doctor’s Appointments
You are expected to be at least 15 minutes early for your appointment, so why shouldn’t you expect to see the doctor in a timely fashion? One person said, ‘”Please arrive 15 minutes before your appointment time.’ is what you commonly hear. Then, they keeps you in the waiting room until 45 minutes after your appointment time.”
Someone else said, “It hurts when you’re booked for the first time slot of the day, and this happens.”
No Insider Stock Trading
As a normal citizen, you aren’t allowed to perform insider stock training, but politicians can. One commenter said, “I can’t do insider stock trading. But the people that make laws about it can legally do it.”
Another said, “They also can vote to raise their own pay and decide if there should be a limit to the amount of time they serve. If I had that power in my current job, I would be set for life.”
As an employee, you are expected to give the courtesy of a two-weeks notice, so why isn’t the same “courtesy” extended to companies letting employees go?
One man said, “You’re being unprofessional if you quit with less than two weeks’ notice (sometimes more). But when we fire you, we expect you to get out this very minute.”
Doctor’s Canceling Appointments
As a patient, if you cancel a doctor’s appointment, you are expected to give 24 hours’ notice or pay a fee. A doctor can just cancel at will with no repercussions at all.
One woman said, “My therapist cancels the day of appointments with no charge or refund but charges me $60 for same day cancellations.”
Another person said, “I had a therapist that was supposed to call me for a session. She never called, so I called her office and there was no answer. That was almost two years ago and she’s still sending me emails and text messages demanding that I pay the $150 hourly fee plus the $80 ‘missed appointment’ fee.”
Wealthy Vs. Poor
The legal system doesn’t operate to the same standards for the wealthy and the poor. The wealthy have the opportunity to use the system, while the poor tend to be abused by it.
One person said, “The super rich folks don’t get the same treatment in our legal system that poorer people get.” Another responded, “It’s a lot easier and affordable to take people to court if they can’t afford a good lawyer. The IRS audits the poor far more than the rich for this same reason, poor people capitulate faster and quieter.”
Gray Hair and Gender
When a man’s hair begins to turn gray, he is referred to as distinguished. When women turn gray, society often perceives them as less than.
One person said, “Gray hair on men = distinguished. On women = old bags.” Someone else said, “Any indication that a man is older means he’s basically more distinguished and better, whereas any indication that a woman is older means she is literally useless now. It’s like they’re not even a human being anymore.”
Dad Of the Year
When fathers take their children out in public or stop by the store for diapers or formula, they are likely to be praised for being such good dads and going above and beyond. Mothers are just seen to be doing their jobs.
One commenter said, “Women out with their kids are often dismissed as just doing what they’re expected to, while men doing the same are more likely to be praised as if it isn’t the bare minimum.”
No matter which side of this you stand on, you have to admit that it is a double standard that men can be out in public with a bare chest and women cannot. One person said, “I’m not making a statement one way or the other about the issue, but if men can be shirtless in public and women can’t, that is a double standard.”
Adult Or Not
In the United States, you are legally an adult for many things at the age of 18. The exception is drinking alcohol. If you are an “adult,” shouldn’t you make that decision for yourself?
One man said, “You’re eligible for the draft at 18. You can be charged as an adult at 18. They let you vote at 18. However, you can’t drink alcohol until 21. Either you’re legally an adult at 18 or it’s 21. Pick one and go with it.”
