The Vital Role Enterprise Level Software Plays in Big Business Success

A large business by definition is a company that employs at least 500 workers.

Out of 938 metropolitan areas in the United States, the US Census Bureau estimates that there are only 16,055 of them. Although large corporations are far fewer in number compared to small and medium sized businesses, their impact on the economy is enormous.

Although the general public is aware of some of the problems faced by SMEs and is sympathetic to the struggles of the “little guy,” they often assume that larger businesses have it made. They are often considered “too big to fail.”

However large business challenges include building a sizable workforce, growing revenue, coping with government regulations, providing healthcare, and, of course, increasing profits. While all businesses face these problems, large businesses must do a larger volume of business to stay in business.

As a result, they feel the impact of these problems more acutely. In addition, large businesses in the same industry often have a fiercer rivalry with each other for market share and they are also more vulnerable to competition from globalization.

One quintessential strategy large businesses deploy to stay on top of the many difficulties that arise from size is to use enterprise-level software to organize their complex data.

Here are four examples of the type of applications a large company might use:

1. Software for managing warehouses

 

Manufacturers and wholesalers need to keep track of their vast inventory. Fortunately, they now have different options for warehouse operations to generate work orders, reduce the number of organization steps, estimate inventory space, track inventory, set up automatic reorders and reduce date entry errors.

Before products can be picked, packed and shipped out of a warehouse many things have to be tracked. These include lot numbers, serial numbers and expiration dates. The more accurate the inventory of warehouse operations, the easier it is to stay within budget parameters.

Another software to support warehouse locations is Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). This is used by maintenance teams to keep a record of physical assets, to organize schedules, to track maintenance tasks and to provide a history of work performed.

Although this level of minute tracking may seem excessive, manually keeping track of maintenance projects quickly leads to inefficiencies. Without it, creeping problems like missing inventory, wrong orders and other such issues begin to get out of control. With it, stockrooms and warehouses are kept neat and everything runs smoothly.

2. Software for supporting talent

 

A talent management system (TMS) is a subset of human resource management systems (HRMS). While HRMS organizes administration issues, TMS focuses on orchestrating issues related to hiring talent, training employees, and improving retention.

TMS can be used as standalone software or be integrated into an HR software. A company that is trying to design a better on-boarding experience to recruit the best talent will find TMS software immensely useful. Incidentally, a Talent Management System is the same thing as an Applicant Tracking System or a Strategic HR system.

3. Software to coordinate resources

 

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) allows an organization to integrate all its applications, so that back office functions like human resources, services, and technology can all be on the same page. “ERP software,” is defined by Webopedia as software that “integrates all facets of an operation — including product planning, development, manufacturing, sales and marketing — in a single database, application and user interface.”

Since this is software that affects the entire enterprise, it requires a special IT team customize it, deploy it, and analyze its data. In addition, the software is always being improved, so it requires the team to stay on top of all upgrades.

4. Software to make marketing easier

 

Marketing automation is growing in popularity as businesses realize how tedious it can be for human beings to repeatedly perform routine marketing tasks like implementing a social media strategy, managing lead generation, designing landing pages and marketing with emails.

While some initial creativity is necessary to create design and copy, once a template is in place, automation can do the task better, faster, and without getting bored to tears by the sheer grinding repetition of the work. Besides expediting the work, marketing automation software makes analytics and report creation a snap.

While this is only a sample of the type of software used by a large business, they do give an idea of how essential software has become to measure all processes to increase accuracy, enhance productivity and improve the bottom line.
