Shout Out Saturday #26

shout out

Happy Saturday everyone! As I wrote yesterday, those of us in the States had the pleasure of coming back from a four day weekend this week, which is usually never fun. That said, it has been a very good, albeit busy, week in the Frugal Rules home. Thankfully I am back to wearing my contacts as opposed to my glasses after my fireworks mishap on the 4th of July. For one reason or another I HATE wearing glasses, and it is always interesting to see the reactions of the littlest members of the Frugal Rules household as they act like they have a different father.

I spent most of the week trying to keep our 18 month old from grabbing my glasses and doing something destructive to them. Unfortunately, without glasses or contacts I would be utterly lost as my vision is so wretched. The events of the past week have really given me pause to wonder if I should bite the bullet and get LASIK surgery done on my eyes. It is not cheap, by any means, but we should be at a point with our HSA account soon where I could look at it as a viable option financially. Beyond that, I am a bit concerned about getting the surgery for my eyes as you only get one pair, but the tradeoff would be quite nice. Have any of you ever had LASIK surgery, and if so, what was it like for you?

It has been another good week for Frugal Rules in the blogosphere. Thanks to everyone who gave us a shout out or included us in their blog carnival. Have a great rest of the weekend everyone!

  • Nice list John! As for your eyes I am glad that the only issue is just the annoyance of having to wear glasses. I actually prefer to wear them over contacts. Maybe just a style/look thing but contacts bother me. As for Lasik I personally haven’t had it done so I cant give you my opinion. However I have two friend that had it done. One loved it and thinks its the best thing in the world. The other was complaining about something were she says she cant scratch her eyes anymore if they itch or something. It has to do with messing something up from the surgery.

    • John says:

I agree, I am glad it was the worst inconvenience that came out of this. Part of the reason why I hate wearing glasses is that I feel that I can see so much less with them. I had never heard that about the surgery…very interesting.

  • Yeah, I’ve heard good and bad about lasik too. Not sure what to tell you there, John, although it does get tiring putting the contacts in and taking them out every day……. Have a great weekend!

Lasik is something I’ve contemplated as well, since I’m pretty much blind without glasses/contacts. I had a friend that got it done and he said it wasn’t too bad, but I read a lot of stories about how it smells like burnt hair during the process. That kind of freaked me out, haha. I might not be brave enough to go through with it even if I could.

I don’t mind glasses/contacts after so many years of wearing them. The thing that bothers me is if there is ever an emergency while I’m asleep and then I have to scramble to find my glasses on the nightstand, which delays me from getting out of bed. Getting up and being able to see perfectly seems like a dream.

    • John says:

Wow, that would be an odd smell to have to deal with.

I know that situation all too well – which is part of the reason why I am looking at LASIK. I just don’t want to have something to deal with like that.

  • We’re easy back into the swing of normal life, too, after a vacation over the 4th of July. I had to work a meal plan and take advantage of some P&G sales at CVS to get the saving juices flowing again!

  • Thanks for the mention! 🙂

  • Terry@Fix em Up Rent em Out says:

I too wore contacts for many years, but I have switched to the ease of wearing glasses. There are so lightweight these days, I hardly notice them on.

LASIK surgery has always seemed a little too drastic for me.

I like your picture of the dog with his ears blowing in the wind.

    • John says:

I know they’re lighter, though I always feel like I can see less when I am wearing glasses. I do want LASIK, though I am not certain I want to take that risk.

  • So glad your eyes are doing better. I don’t like wearing glasses either (esp in the summer when it’s hot and muggy). I’ve thought about lasik but my doctor said my eyes aren’t “bad enough” to really make it worth the surgery. Sure would be nice not to have to deal with contacts anymore.
