Welcome back to another Frugal Friday. As you can tell from the post title, I got hit with something this week the day after my birthday and it was not fun! I do not know if it was the flu or not, but suffice it to say I am glad to be on the mend. The fun thing this week was getting a home brewing kit from Mrs. Frugal Rules for my birthday. I’ve wanted to home brew beer for a while now, but never wanted to spend the money on it myself. It looks like a pretty sweet kit and am excited to get started on brewing my first batch of beer. I don’t know how frugal brewing your own beer is, but I’ll definitely be looking for ways to be frugal. As a result, you’ll probably be seeing a post or two about how to save money on home brewing here in the not too distant future.
As I was sick, I did not get as much chance to read as many blog posts as I normally do, but the ones I did were good as always. If you have the time this weekend, I encourage you to check out some of these great blog posts.

I don’t drink beer, but the home brewing kit sounds like fun! Seems like everyone is getting sick these days…somehow I’ve avoided it. Thanks for the mention!

What a bummer! So glad you’re on the mend, John! And what a great gift from Mrs. FR! We’ve avoided the yuck this year too, but we’ve got close friends who were hit hard this week as well. Have a healthy and fun weekend with your new toy, and thanks for the mention!

I hate getting sick, I am one of those people who is healthy almost 100% of the time, but when I get sick, I get really sick and just don’t move for around a week.

Feel better John! My husbands cousin brews crazy good beer! He also knows his was around a smoker, he makes his own bacon and everything, beer and bacon….the way to a mans heart?

Sorry to hear you weren’t feeling so well mate. I don’t get the flu shot but have been lucky that I haven’t gotten sick. I take plenty of vitamins every day multi, D (high dose once a week), Vit C in my water 8-10 glasses per day, B vitamins… etc etc. I don’t know if that’s helping me along but why stop now, right? Have a great weekend mate…. and happy brewing looking forward to hearing about it..

Being from Kentucky, I can’t help but think of home brewing as a still set up in the woods manned by a hillbilly with a long beard in overalls. I’m sure they’ve come a long way. Hope your family avoided the sickness. Thanks for the mention.

Thanks for the mention John. I have been brewing beer for a little over 2 years. It is fun, but the wait can kill you. I would say that if you like to drink beer, then brewing it yourself is frugal and rewarding. I can usually brew about 60 bottles of high class beer for about $30. It is expensive the first time you do it because you need to buy the correct supplies, but since you have a kit, then you should be good. If you need any advice, let me know.
Grayson @ Debt RoundUp recently posted..Weekly Personal Finance Blog RoundUp – 1/25/2013
No problem Grayson! My brother started about that long ago as well and he has said the exact same thing. I figured the up front cost would be a little bad, but should work itself out in the end. Now I just have to find the time to get started on it.
Happy belated birthday and I hope you feel better. Thanks for the links, I am in good company.

OMG, my husband would LOVE a home brewing kit! Where did your wife get it, if you don’t mind me asking? Sounds like a great gift
Mackenzie recently posted..Link Love: Toys Are Taking Over Edition!
As am I.
She got it through a brewing supply company in Minneapolis I believe. If you would like the name I can give it to you. It came in two massive boxes and felt like each had a dead body in it. It came with everything to get started as well as a beer to make for the first time. Eventually I would like to grow my own hops.
Glad you’re feeling better, definitely going around right now. I am going to be curious how the home brewing goes as I have always wanted to try it myself.
Thanks for the mention, I really appreciate it!
