There are many dental options for seniors. You can opt for full dental coverage or variations of partial coverage. There are many insurers you could opt for, but this guide isn’t going to recommend anyone in-particular. Instead, it’s going to reveal some of the options available to you.

The following list will give you an idea of where you as a senior citizen can get started with the sometimes complex process of having your oral healthcare covered, because a visit to the dentist is expensive if you are uninsured. There are many discounted dental options available so make sure to do your homework prior to visiting the dentist so you can save money.

Oral Health America

This national non-profit organization setup the website to provide oral health resources for older adults. You can find state-specific information to give you an idea of what your options are depending on where you live.

Eldercare Locator

The Administration on Aging allows you to get some specific information about your oral healthcare needs. The Eldercare Locator is the main tool that allows you to search by state for a specific service. It’s designed for multiple areas, including health, transportation, and legal issues, but there’s a dedicated part for senior dental insurance. You can even call one of their information specialists for additional help.

United Way

The United Way can help you connect with services in your area. Simply by dialing 211 you can receive area-specific advice over the phone. This is a plan designed for senior citizens all over the US.

The Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly is part of the Medicare and Medicaid programs. This is about helping senior citizens meet their healthcare needs in the community. It’s mainly geared towards general health, but there’s also a section dedicated to dentistry.

The Health Resources and Services Administration

If you are unable to find affordable senior insurance, or you simply lack the coverage for specific procedures, this federally-funded health center program will point you in the right direction. You generally pay what you can afford as it’s based on your income.

The Dental Lifeline Network

You may have known this under its former name of the National Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped. If you are in need of comprehensive dental services, this is where you need to turn. They even have specific services for those who have existing medical risks (who may be uninsurable) and those with disabilities.

So What Can You Do About Insurance?

These resources enable you to find help if you are underinsured or if you don’t know where to turn, but it’s always better to have full and comprehensive insurance. It generally pays for itself if you undergo regular dental checkups every year. But if you are still searching for full dental coverage, here are some tips for getting the best deal:

  • Deal with insurers with a strong track record for dealing with the elderly.
  • Make sure you shop around for the best deal. The cost of insurance can differ heavily between insurers.
  • Call the insurer to discuss your specific needs. An online price comparison tool can only do so much.

How will you begin finding the right insurance option for you today?
