Top 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

know about me

Happy Friday friends! Do you ever have one of those weeks where it seems like you can never get your head above water? Well, that has been us this week. We have client work coming out of our ears, good problem I know, but it has led to little sleep this week. That’s also not to mention the fact that if I hear “Let it Go” (the song from Frozen) one more time I might just let it go and by that ‘it’ I mean my sanity. Ah, the joys of little kids. 🙂

Anyway, it occurred to me that I had nothing in the well for today. I read a fun post recently by Shannon over at Financially Blonde where she shared fun facts about herself and thought I’d do something fun like that today. I did something similar along those lines about 16-17 months ago, but Frugal Rules had like three readers back then, and one of them was my Mom, so I figured why not. So, if you were itching to know something juicy, odd, crazy, etc. about me then today’s your day!

1. I have an abnormally large head. I kid you not, to quote So, I Married an Axe Murderer, “it’s like an orange on a toothpick.” Friends and family like to poke fun at me for it and justifiably so I guess. In college, I had friends take me out for my birthday to a Mexican restaurant. The servers all came to sing Happy Birthday to me and put a sombrero on my head. It just sat there atop my head, not at all fitting, while everyone other than me enjoyed a good, hearty laugh.

2. If you’re looking for someone to play Steven Tyler, the frontman of Aerosmith, at your next party then I’m your guy. I’ve been known to do a mean Steven Tyler impersonation in my day and the scary thing is that it I’m stone cold sober while doing it.

Aerosmith Steven Tyler

I do a mean Steven Tyler impersonation. Just ask Mrs. Frugal Rules!

3. I’m deathly afraid of heights. I don’t know what it is, but I always have been. I’m not afraid to admit it, but if I have to get any more than six inches off the ground I turn into a big baby.

4. I wear purple nearly every day. Why purple? I got my undergrad at Kansas State University and live in Nebraska. Anyone who knows anything about Nebraska knows they all love their Nebraska football here. I refuse to be overcome by the kool-aid, so I gladly wear my purple every day.

Kansas State University

There’s not much better than enjoying a KState game with your son, in my opinion!

5. My favorite music is Metallica. For some weird reason, whenever I have writer’s block all I need to do is play some of their music and the words start flowing. Crazy, I know, but with the amount of writing I do it’s a godsend.

6. My favorite drink is anything that includes Vodka. I’ve really started to enjoy brewing my own beer…I  know, I’m sounding a bit on the alcoholic side here…but if I have to choose a drink then it’s going to be something that includes Vodka.

Vodka

If forced to choose, I’d have to drink Vodka every time.

7. One of my favorite things to do in college was country dancing. Those who know me now find it hard to believe, but I did. No line dancing for me, but I loved country swing and two-step.  What can I say, it was a great way to meet girls. 😉

8. My lovely wife of nearly 13 years comes from the great state of California. When I was single, I for some reason “told God” I would never marry anyone from California. Why I wished that, I don’t know but the moment I met my wife I knew I’d be eating those words. Cheesy I know. 😉

California

La Jolla, one of my wife’s favorite places in California, helped change my mind about the state 🙂

9. If I could live in one place it would most definitely be Germany. I’ve been there twice and absolutely love it. It’s beautiful and so full of history. A close second is a tie between Ireland and St. Lucia, but I’ve got to stay true to my German roots.

10. As I wrote recently, I’m currently working on getting in better shape. Due to that, a lot of what I used to eat has been cut completely from my eating habits. That said, I think I would literally kill someone right now to get my hands on a slice of deep dish pizza with Italian Sausage. But, alas, I’ve got better goals in mind.

pizza

What I wouldn’t give right now for a slice of deep dish pizza from Pizzeria UNO!

  • Nice! I want to visit Germany, but have never made it. I also have German roots, but Greg is Norwegian.

  • Thanks so much for including my post, John! Metallica rocks! 🙂

  • I have the opposite problem from you in that I have a very small head. I could wear child’s sunglasses and hats. Seriously my entire family has small heads. lol! Good luck with your healthy eating goals! I love these kinds of lists because I learn so much about other bloggers!

  • Liz says:

I can totally relate to #8. I remember during high school we were studying Greek mythology in an English class. We were learning about the culture and how the culture was misogynist and women didn’t really get to participate in society. I specifically remember thinking “I would never date a Greek guy..” As fate would have it, I dated and am now happily married to a Greek. Go figure : )

  • Ah, who doesn’t love La Jolla? It’s beautiful there. I’ve been twice. Wish I could afford to live there and my other favorite place is Point Loma in San Diego. It has a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean.

  • I LOVE that I inspired you to write this John, your list is awesome!! If we paired your massive head with my t-rex arms we would have one wacky looking person. 🙂 I literally laughed so hard I couldn’t read the sombrero story to my hubby this morning. I know how you feel about being made fun of for something you can’t control. And I love all of the big noggin jokes in So You Married An Axe Murderer. And it is funny what a sense of humor God has because I told Him that I would never live in Florida and then my biggest job opportunity in my twenties was in Florida. And guess who lived there for five years and had her son there? 🙂

    • John says:

Lol, that’s classic! It would be hysterical and glad I could give you a laugh. It is crazy at times to see the sense of humor God has – especially when we tell Him we won’t or never do something. 🙂

  • Lauren says:

I feel you on Frozen. We got the dvd last week, and my daughter has been watching it daily and singing the song nonstop!

  • OMG – Metallica was SO our band back in the day, me and my peeps. Now I’m more of a Boston/Cars girl, and I’ve ingrained that same wisdom into our children. 🙂 And SO funny about Stephen Tyler : gotta see that someday, LOL. Germany is a place Maddie really wants to visit, since Rick is 100% German. Good to know it’s beautiful there. Thanks for sharing, John – this is awesome!

  • Frozen. LOL! It’s a cute movie but it’s entirely possible that I may accidentally throw the DVD away. And I will feel just horrible about it too. :)I always love these kinds of posts! La Jolla is such a beautiful town, just gorgeous. If I wasn’t already a Cali girl, La Jolla would make one! We’re real wine aficionados and we love to stay in wine country for the weekend and restock our supply! Have a great weekend!

    • John says:

I’m with you there Shannon! It just might find it’s way to the landfill. 🙂 I agree, La Jolla is so beautiful and thankful to have in-laws that are less than five minutes from it. Nicole wants to take me to wine country sometime, hopefully sooner rather than later.

  • Grayson Bell says:

Glad to learn more about your John. I am from California, so if we need to have words, then let it flow! Now you are married to someone from California and work with someone else. What are you going to do!

One thing that many people don’t know about me is that I like classical music. It calms me and allows me to focus. I don’t listen to it all of the time, but when times are getting a little crazy, I turn it on.

    • John says:

Ha ha, I know. I’ll let in slide in this one instance though. 😉

Interesting, I can actually see that about you. Nicole likes to play it for background music so I usually get my fill of it.

  • I really enjoy these type of posts! I’m glad you are super into college football because I’m starting to get really into Gopher football and it’s nice to talk about it with other college football fans. I LOVE pizza and we eat it at least once a week. I work out quite a bit but in all honesty it’s in part offset by some of my bad eating habits.

I guess a couple things about me is that I love playing poker and used to play a TON before the online sites were shut down. I like playing in the big multi-table tournaments while working on blogging or other stuff on my computer.

I’ll have to do a post like this sometime soon so I’ll reserve my other stuff for then : )

    • John says:

Yep, I love me some college football. It’s the only thing keeping us with cable these days.

Very cool! I’m not a big poker player but I do like blackjack from time to time.

  • E.M. says:

Purple is my favorite color besides blue. If I go shopping any time soon, I think I need to add more purple to my wardrobe! I also love vodka, though I don’t drink too often. Cherry vodka was the first drink I ever had, so that might have something to do with it. Sweet tea vodka is my favorite, though. I hope you get some sleep soon, and thanks for letting us get to know you a little better!

  • Purple is my favorite color and I dream of living in La Jolla! As for something you may not know about me… I wrote about it once, a while ago, but I am Ukrainian. Well, only half, but I speak the language and am an active member of the culture and diaspora here in NYC and all over the USA.

    • John says:

We do as well. My in-laws live less than five minutes outside of La Jolla so we could just move out there some day. Very cool that you speak Ukranian! I was very close to becoming fluent in German though it isn’t with me much anymore.

  • Josh @ CNA says:

Hey John, thanks for sharing more of your life. Here are a few things you probably don’t know about me…

    1. I’m deathly afraid of heights too. I didn’t used to be, but I was in a skydiving incident and almost died. Since then, I couldn’t walk across a rope bridge to save my life!

    2. I hate shaving my beard. I’d rather walk around looking like Patchy than shave, but my fiance makes sure I stay at least somewhat well groomed.

    3. I love whiskey. Any type of whiskey really…it’s great stuff!

    • John says:

Wow, glad to hear that you made it through that experience and I’d be the same way as well. I’m not a big fan of shaving either and now that I work from home I can get by with it a little more.

  • Haha. It’s funny that I’ve actually met you and didn’t know any of these things (well, almost). Great read

  • For some reason I can’t picture you country dancing or listening to Metallica but I guess that’s why these 10 fun facts are so FUN! 🙂 Have a good weekend John!

  • I’m with you on “Let it go.” We all love the movie but my kids are wearing that song out. I give them about twice through the chorus at any one sitting and then shut it down.

I’ve told God several things I would never do…He always seems to surprise me by bringing those things down my path anyway. Have a great weekend and thanks for the mention!

    • John says:

Yea, I wish I only heard the chorus twice a day. That would be great…it’s more like twice an hour I hear it. 🙂

Yep, it’s pretty useless to tell God we won’t do anything as it usually just ends up happening anyway.

  • Kassandra says:

My favourite Metallica song is Nothing Else Matters. I could listen to that on replay! It’s fun to learn a bit more about you John. What about California did you not like initially?

    • John says:

That’s one of my favorite songs as well. I could listen to the Black album over and over. Oh, it really was just a stereotype I had in my mind…you know the whole it’s the land of fruits and nuts. 😉

  • Kemkem says:

I love these types of posts. A refreshing change. I love Metallica too, the latest movie was awesome! I can’t wait to visit Germany!!!

  • Great post. Seems like we have lots in common including the abnormally large head. I do however prefer wearing red.

  • Kim says:

Let’s start a club for parents who are going to become ax murderers if we hear Let it Go one more time!

My fun fact is that I hate most dressings or sauces of any kind, but will put A1 sauce on anything including salads, potatoes, or any kind of meat or fish.

    • John says:

Most definitely Kim! I’ve started making variations of the song and it drives the kids batty.

I am the same way Kim, minus the A1. 🙂

  • anna says:

I loved your “So I Married An Axe Murderer” reference – “his head’s like Sputnik.” 🙂 This was so awesome getting to know you a bit more, John, thanks for sharing!

  • I love these types of posts. I’s always nice to get to know other bloggers past the personal finance topic. I laughed at the “abnormally large head” point. I babysat a little boy who had a HUGE head and he was always getting it stuck in places/things. I felt like I was the only one that noticed it’s size, haha! Good luck in your health goal. I’m trying to do something similar!

  • debt debs says:

John ~ I love posts like this! Your son is adorable, I guess he’s a lot older than that pic now.

~ So, I Married an Axe Murderer is one of my favourite movies. We used to recite quotes from it in our family all the time. The famous “Excuse me, waitress, I believe I ordered a large cappuccino … HEELLLOOO!” was a favourite with the kids. We actually bought those huge soup mugs and used them a lot because they loved it!!
~ I have a large head too, and have a hard time finding hats to fit…. sigh
~ I try to tell myself it’s because of my big brain #neverworks
~ My first love is Ireland (I have family there) so I understand your love of Germany, similarly

    • John says:

Thanks Debs! Yea, he was 18ish months, I believe, then and now he’s a little over four…time goes by WAY too fast!

That is a classic line! My wife loves Ireland as well. I think she’s 1/4 Irish, which means she’s Irish. 🙂 We actually spent two weeks there for our honeymoon and absolutely loved it, it’s SO beautiful there!

  • Heck, this is my first click on your blog but I already feel like I know you!

About me… I once dated a girl from CA. She turned out to be all sorts of crazy though (very materialistic too). Congrats for you though!

    P.S. Go Huskers! 🙂

    • John says:

Yea, that was my overall impression of pretty much everyone from California. Sorry to hear about your experience and pretty happy for mine. 🙂

I’ll let the Huskers chatter pass since you’re a first time visitor. 🙂
